After a long hiatus worthy of the opening in “On The Road”, Mr. X and I have been hitting the bar scene again.
We’ve spent the last few Tuesdays at Spring Hill Tavern, the downstairs bar of The Dolphin Striker.
Tuesday is a great night to be there. For the past couple of weeks, Dave Gerard has been belting out some decent covers, including tunes from Dylan and John Hiatt. I’m partial to their usual Tuesday night lineup — Jon Nolan and Melvern Taylor.
The scene there is pretty good, too. We saw White Girl hanging there with one of her friends. And there were some other twenty and thirty-somethings around the bar that made you forget what night of the week it was.
As for the beer drinking, I am impressed with the Guinness taps there. The stout is smooth, creamy and cold. Mr. X likes his Sam Adams year round so he had some Winter Lager. I dig that. But it’s all about the darker beers for me between now and the end of March.
That reminds me: This girl at State Street the other night order a Corona. I told Mr. X something seemed fundamentally wrong about drinking such a beer in the middle of winter. He thought she was in the clear but said if her male friend ordered one, he would take a hit on the manliness front. I have to agree.
Anyway on Monday night, we fared pretty well. The Portsmouth Brewery was a nice surprise. A half dozen people at the bar enjoying a football game. A decent bartender. And after being there for a short while, some Mandy Moore-type strolled in the door with some guy. Not bad for background scenery. The Oatmeal Stout there was nice. I would really like to their Imperial Stout back on tap. Mr. X went for the Bottlerocket IPA.
After draining those, Mr. X needed his State Street fix: PBR tall. It was late. I needed to sleep. But when Mr. X wants to get his PBR on… well, that’s another story for later.
